Copy Kids Healthy Eating DVD: Review and Giveaway! Ends 5/9

My family has a history of diabetes, so both my daughter and I are at risk if we don't eat properly.  I want to instill healthy eating habits in our family, so I know I need to start early with Lily to see that happen.  However, I am not 100% sure where to begin.  Sure, I feed her healthy foods, but what happens when she no longer wants to try new things?  I know that day will come, and I dread it.

I then read about Copy-Kids and became relieved!  It a DVD designed for kids so that they learn from the best source -- other kids!

Let me explain:

Caturday!

Tike Jumping for Joy.
It's that time of the week again!  And I'm SO excited because Animal Planet had Cats 101 on earlier.  I love that show!

So, time for today's cat fact!

*Ahem*
"Having a cat declawed is a major surgery known as onychectomy, performed under anesthesia, that removes the tip of each digit (from the first knuckle out) of the cat's forepaws. There is a slight chance of death in the surgery, and a declawed cat may have an increased risk of infection and life-long discomfort in its paws. This surgery is not recommended for an adult animal and is considered an act of animal cruelty in some countries. "

So please refrain from declawing your cats.  You can instead clip them carefully with a claw-clipper, or get kitty claw covers.  If you clip the nails, make sure you do so very carefully and only cut the tip because the claws have a vein in them and it could really hurt or even kill your cat if cut too deep.

Personally, I feel like organic is the way to go when growing plants, especially plants you will be using to feed yourself and your family.  But it should not just be the plants that are organic, but the food as well.  I know I want my garden vegetables to be all organic, even if it is just cow peas and tomatoes!
Whitney Farms® allows you to have the healthy organic garden you want this year.  Their 100% natural organic plant food has been perfected over the 25+ years Whitney Farms® has been around.  Their plant food mix has:
  • Low to no dust
  • No manure odor
  • Is easy to apply
  • Contains beneficial microbes
  • Has specially designed protein-based blends that provide your plants with both macro and micronutrients they need to grow and thrive
With all of these in mind, it is no secret that Whitney Farms organic plant food is great for plant health.  It promotes the growth of large flowers and vegetables while shunning harmful chemicals.

Foraging Friday

Lately I've been looking into the foraging scene and blogs like Eat The Weeds, learning how to live off the land.  It might sound weird or gross at first, but talk about the ultimate freebies.  Wild edible plants in your own backyard... Sounds good to me!  Organic and healthy is even better, right?

Plant identification can be tricky and it is important to pay very close attention to what you eat.  Some plants are poisonous, obviously, and can also look similar to edible plants.  BEFORE YOU EAT ANYTHING WILD, BE 200% SURE YOU KNOW WHAT IT IS!!!  Err on the side of caution.

I'm not here to teach anyone about foraging, just sharing my experience. Go to a professional to learn, please.

Dandelions are one of these edible plants. Every part is edible -- leaves, flower, stem, and roots -- all used for different things. Today I decided to cook some dandelion leaves.

Lily is my foraging partner.  She likes to pick up whatever we're around.

These are the parts of the dandelion, minus the roots I did not get.

Lily decided she wanted to help.

And wanted to try them raw.

"Oooooh, Dandelions!"

This is the broken stem of another dandelion plant.  Notice the white sap?  Most plants with white sap are lethal, so make sure you know which ones are not before munching down!  Dandelions are an exception :)  The white sap makes them bitter though.

This is why we boil our dandelion greens!!  I boiled mine for about 5 minutes, changed the water, and boiled them again for another 5ish.  They could have used a bit more in my opinion, but the boiling helps get rid of the bitterness.

Sideways picture... my bad.

And the finished product!!

How did it taste?  Well, it actually tasted pretty good.  It could have used some seasonings, but because it was my first try I wanted the full natural-taste experience.

Dandelions have long been used for medicinal purposes, and the roots for magical purposes.  If I am not mistaken, a dandelion root can make a nice tea :)

I can't wait to try some more!

Anytime Costumes Review and Giveaway (Ends 5/8)

I have always been a big fan of dress-up and costumes.  Halloween is definitely my favorite time of year to dress up, but it isn't the only time.  There are Renaissance fairs that I dream of going to as well as just days I want to be fun.  Not to mention movie theater premiers, right?  But stores don't always carry costumes, and Halloween Express is not always open all year (much to my dismay!)  That's where Anytime Costumes comes in!

Thoughtful Thursday: "Bullied 13-year-old SET ON FIRE"?!

So, I wasn't sure if I was going to post anything today.  I've been a bit busy with some last-minute things in my class and I came across this article on Yahoo: Bullied 13-Year-Old Set on Fire Changes Thinking.

Um... First of all... With everything lately with children killing themselves and being killed due to bullying, you cannot say that school-yard bullying is the norm.  Bullying is serious no matter how you look at it, so to see this kind of attack on a child... It's BEYOND normal "bullying." It's a freaking assault!  This does not CHANGE my thinking, it confirms it.

Obviously we don't have all of the information in this article, but I feel like we need more of something to keep this at bay.  The "bully" needs a psycho-evaluation, but who is to say this won't happen to another kid? We cannot save them all, but we can try, right?

I feel like it's our jobs as adults (parents, instructors, neighbors, whatever) to protect our younger generations and think we all need to make it very clear to our kids that if they are being bullied to ignore the death threats and tell an adult.  We are not invincible, but we can be heroes to our youngin's if we pay close attention to them, be open, and talk with them.  Let them know they are safe, so when a threat comes at them they have the confidence to get help.

There's my rant.  If you have a response to the article or to what I wrote please don't hesitate to leave a comment.  I know my stance isn't a cure-all.

Wordless Wednesday: What you lookin' at?

Saving at EdenFantasys! Organic, Fun, and more!

TV Tuesday

Welps, tonight is another Dancing With The Stars elimination.  Who's going now?

Last week Gavin DeGraw went home, much to my dismay.  BUT... as much as I love his music, there were better dancers, so I can't complain.  He did better than I could do!  At both singing and dancing.

I must choose a new favorite to win, but I am still uncertain who.

I do like the idea of "keeping the spirit of the dance" or whatever that they are doing now so great dancers don't go home.  It's a little late in the game, but I'm glad it's there this season.  But with so many good dancers, it's going to be tough!

Any thoughts?  Who do YOU want to win? Or is there another show you've been following? Do tell!

Awesome Pet-Related Giveaways!

In honor of Caturday I've decided to pull some pet-related giveaways I've found around the net.  Enjoy!!

Bungee Burrow Bed for Cats (or Small Dogs) 5/2 (Giveaway hop Linky on post)

Today is Caturday!

Did you know...

"The sound a cat makes is unique and is rendered onomatopoeically as "meow" or similar variants ("miaow", "miau" etc.) in most European languages as well as Mandarin Chinese. Japanese has it as "nyaa" or "nyan"; Korean as "yaong" or "nyaong".  In Arabic the sound is transcribed as "mowa'a.""

That explains "Nyan Cat," huh?

"Nyan nyan nyan nyan nyan!"
Image from http://nyan-cat.com/images/nyan-cat.gif
Well, today is Caturday, so I thought I would post some things related to my kitty, Tike Myson.  I don't recognize him enough, so today will be his day!

Tike is my furbaby.  I've had him since kittenhood and am so glad we kept him around.  He's a joy to have around, but he must stay outside now that we are living at my grandmother's house.  He was raised as an indoor kitty, so he's been taking it kind of hard.

Yesterday, though, he learned how to get in to the screened porch out back and found his way to my open window.  At 7AM he was meowing at it, trying to get me to let him in.

We usually leave the back door to the porch open, and he's already gotten inside a few times.  I don't mind, but my grandmother does.  I have just never seen a cat fight so avidly to get indoors!

Hopefully soon he can be an indoor kitty again.

Fashionable Friday!!!

I'm not a gigantic fashion guru, but I do like to look nice.  I also like to make sure Lily is at the top of her game with her outfits and accessories.

Just a few shout-outs here, before I begin.  NoMoreRack.com is a GREAT place to pick up affordable fashionable items without having to leave your house.  I love a lot of their outfits and accessories, and you never know when an Insanity Deal is going to pop up!

Fab.com also has some great styles and accessories at a discount.  They also have a lot of designer and unique items, so don't forget to check them out daily!

Lastly, Listia.com is an awesome place to find FREE clothes, accessories, and anything else under the sun.  I have gotten some awesome things for Lily on Listia and will continue to do so!

Now onward to the fashion!

This outfit is by Authentic Baby and is 100% cotton.  It's stretchy and comfortable and is one of the few outfits Lily doesn't try to rip off.

This outfit is by Carter's and is 100% cotton.  It's a cute little romper with an adorable pattern.  Unfortunately, this is Lily's last wearing because she is finally growing out of it.

Last is a headband Lily's daddy bought for her.  It was an Ebay find, and the cool part is the flower clip comes off.  So we can get some pretty awesome use out of it.

Do you have any fashion secrets?  Don't hesitate to share!!

Making Things Happen Through Faith and Symbolism: Personal Post

Before I continue I'm just going to say that this is not aimed at any one faith, religion, or whatever.  From my own experiences I feel there is some truth in all religions and faiths, but that is my path.  These are my own thoughts and feelings and in no way represent an entire group of people. Your own path is probably very different from mine, but that is not why I am writing.

I am writing to share with you my own experiences with symbolism in faith and self-improvement.  Now, whether you believe in God or gods, angels, animal totems, spirit guides, or just believe in something, symbolism can be a great way to instill a motivation within yourself to make things happen.  You might ask how this works?  Well, I'll give you an example.

Niche

"Do I have a niche?" I asked myself today.  I am one of many bloggers, but none of us are alike.  So where do I fall in the blogger world?

Now, I love freebies and giveaways and post them when I can but,  I am not a pure giveaway blog (though I have a couple coming up soon :) ) nor am I constantly updating about freebies (though a few here and there I do catch).

I take many pictures and post them on days Lily has not hidden my camera.  I am not a photography blog.

I make a few things here and there and majored in Studio Art, but am not a craft, art  or design blog.

I play massive amounts of video games.  Not that Facebook stuff, 'mind you.  Games with consoles or PC games, like Pokemon, Zelda, World of Warcraft...  I am not a gamer blog (though that would be wicked.)

I am a big animal person, but I'm not pet blogging.

I am a total New-Age nut and love mysticism and different faiths, ancient and modern.  I'm not a New-Age blogger.

Fashion.  I love it, but can't afford it LOL.  Definitely not a fashion blogger, though one day I MUST get a Spirit Hood.  That ties in with mysticism too :D

Organic and green living is a big part of my life (at least when I can.)  I'm not an eco-blogger.

Let's face it, I do not have a specific niche.  I'm pretty much a jack of all trades and master in none.  Except Mommydom.

Despite everything listed above, it doesn't change that I am a momma.  Lily is with me through all of the above and I wouldn't have it any other way.

It is my niche, to be a mom blogger, because no two of us are exactly alike.
