Weirder Than Marshmallows -- Review and Giveaway (closed)

Weirder Than Marshmallows. What comes to mind when you say that? Marshmallow. Look at the word over and over again and it becomes a lot more than just a fluffy puff of sugary goodness. Marsh… Mallow… Break it down and realize that it is not what it seems at first. At first glance it is something we love to roast around a campfire, but with more contemplation it’s something a lot more. It’s weird.

Daniel Fogg made this discovery a long time ago, so I’m glad I am not the only one who feels this way about the primary ingredient of a chocolate S’more. Fogg’s compilation of essays and observances in the book is almost like a marshmallow. It’s weird, but there is more underneath the cover than what first glance may hold.

The book was compiled by Fogg’s mother, Deborah Carney, so we have her to thank for the opportunity and privilege of reading. NightFire Publications, the publisher of the book, was also created in honor of her son.

Weirder Than Marshmallows is non-fiction and broken down into five different sections:

Do Not Stop on Tracks showcases warnings that should never have to be warned.
En Masse contains stories of mass ignorance.
Technology Sucks explores the hazards of the technological age.
That’s Just Freaky features Twilight Zone like tales of paranormality.
Weird Stuff is stuff that is… well, weird” -- from the Introduction, Weirder Than Marshmallows

I could already tell I was going to like this book. I just love compilations like this and witty observations. It is also good for those who can only read a little at a time – Each chapter is a different piece of writing so even slow-readers are accommodated. I, however, couldn’t stop reading until I was finished. I don't want to give anything away, but the essays really make you think. I was pretty much hooked, wanting to read what he was going to say next.

While reading I found myself many times saying aloud, “I totally agree,” “You are so right!” “That’s really creepy,” “Oh my gosh,” along with the occasional laughter and tears. Yes, tears. I’m a sappy wimp, I know, but it was well worth it. Anyone that decides to read this will not be wasting their time. I thoroughly enjoyed reading and I know you will do the same.

Where to get this book: You can buy the e-book at Amazon.com for $7.99, and if you are awesome and send your receipt to dc@nightfirepublications.com you will be sent a Scentsy Pumpkin Marshmallow Scent Circle. How cool is that?

Every Day Is Christmas For Lily

Lily's Great Aunt Melanie came by today with a bunch of stuff from a friend of hers. The highlight? Her new seat!

Isn't it awesome?! Apparently there is a kind of tray that goes with it, but for now she likes to sit next to me at dinner. It works :) Thank you!

Not much else to say. I have another book review coming up soon, so stay tuned :) Another Kindle version. Stellar, right?

OH! Meteor shower tonight! Around midnight Eastern time, so be on the look-out! The Leonids!

How To Catch Happy: Book Review

Wow. All I can really say is. “Wow.”

How to Catch Happy is a very short yet VERY insightful book on, well, happiness. Using a few fishing anecdotes the author, Jim F. Kukral, addresses an issue many of us don’t realize until it’s too late: that we worry about so much we forget our own happiness.

I really have to say I am glad I took the time to sit down and read it when I did because it made me see that I spend a lot of my time worrying about money and what I don’t have and not enough of it doing things I enjoy. We always hear that, “Money isn’t everything,” or, “Money can’t buy happiness,” but do we ever really listen? More times than not we probably blow it off and continue to care way too much about that next paycheck.

How to Catch Happy lets the reader know it is okay to be happy. Sure, bills need paying and we need to eat, but we do not need fancy things to be happy. This is great news, considering all the economic hardships we seem to be going through today. I know it makes me feel better.

Before reading the forefront of my thoughts was, “How can I make some money today?” After reading, it is more like, “I’m going to take some time out today to wind down and re-energize.”

I highly recommend this book to everyone. I do not care if you already think you are happy; please take twenty minutes out of your day to make a lifelong change in your way of life. You will not regret it!

You can purchase it at Amazon.com for $0.99 for Kindle or $7.00 paperback. It's worth it!

Pierce Baby Ears: Yes or No?

I came across a debate post on We Have It All that applies to me: Infant ear piercings. So I decided to put in my two cents worth.

Topic:
Piercing Infant or Toddler Ears - Yay or Nay? What do YOU say?

I say "Nay" to infant ear piercings, but that's my decision. I'm not saying anyone else is wrong for saying "Yay", but that's my personal preference.

I know when I was little I kept asking and asking and asking and I was upset people had their ears pierced when they were babies. I felt so baby-ish. However, looking back I am glad that I was able to decide when I got my first piercings because it made me really think about getting my second pair. I feel that Lily should have a chance to choose what she wants to do with her life. I think when she's old enough to go with friends for a birthday bash or something similar that would be great.

It's Lily's life, so I'll let her live it up the way she wants. ...Within reason :)

I am also afraid that, with my luck, she would rip out the earrings and I wouldn't be able to figure it out or something. Maybe I'm paranoid. I'm scared of infections, too. I am ALL OVER that diaper rash. I just don't want any kind of discomfort I could have easily prevented.

She'll get her piercings when she's much older if she really wants them.
